History of the Long Mill
1882- Riverside Cotton Mills is started, with the buildings comprising the “Long Mill” being built and bought from other mills through the 1880’s and 1890’s.
1900-1960’s- Booming business throughout the first half of the 1900’s allowed rapid expansion as the United States moved through two world wars. War-time contracts with the military allowed continued success and expansion in Danville as well as the Southeast at large.
Late 1900’s- The last couple decades of the 1900’s were characterized by the threat of cheaper international labor markets. Danville VA’s importance in the textile landscape diminishes in importance leading to the bankruptcy and cease of operations for all plants operated by Dan River Mills in 2007.
2008- “Long Mill” buildings destroyed by a fire, the cause of which is unknown.
2011- Parcel of land transferred to Danville Family YMCA for construction of the first building on the Dan River in over a century. The progressive facility design positioned directly on the river achieved an Award of Merit in 2015 for the best Athletic Business Architectural Showcase.
